When I first saw the starterpack trend, some figurine Barbie style on Instagram, I found it quite smart. Not the full quid here obviously, as it already existed, but first time to do it that quick, for free and for everyone. Then artists claimed it thanks to Patouret* and that is when I saw the commitment of such a trend.
Indeed, if you look beyond, it has started a meaningful discussion about each and everyone responsabilities in the ecological crisis and artistic creativity. Gosh this feels good!
This creative trend was amazing for my blank page syndrome as I could create with a modele (far less pressure). Also I would be part of a group (the human-artist-group..?). Because I am more a carrot person than a stick person, I had to create quickly with no anticipation or too much time to think thoroughly. Trends are, by essence, rapidly gone…Do not miss the boat!
Draft is human
Let us not turn a blind eye here…Human art is imperfection. I first hesitated between a paper crafted starterpack, then digital art convinced me. I really appreciate the feeling of infinite creative possibilites of digital art. I have a daily use of my Ipad and Procreate, this amazing creation beast. Usually I need two drafts before inking.
The work behind an illustration
AI working time:
– Prompt writing by human ~ 1 min
– 2D image generation : less than 60 sec
– Export and publishing on social media by human ~ 5 min
Total : ~ 8 minutes, a quick satisfaction and a lot of drinkable water **
What about the human artist?
– Sketch on actual paper (yes, even with an Ipad I still use paper sometimes) ~ 1h
– 3h40 drawing, correcting, redoing, zooming, coloring on Procreate
– 15 minutes for the Insta post (exportation, text, hashtags).
Total : ~ 5 hours, and the feeling that I participated in something greater than me.
I obviously know that it takes much more time than writing a prompt in ChatGPT. I obviously know I will not “save time” on domestic cores or commissions. Still, it is a great moment of mindful creation and I gained experience, for that only I can be proud of.
